RE: ISO SC 34/JWG 7, new work item for digital publications?

I agree, and I think to use the PAS process, the spec must be a recommendation. I do think it helps in adoption in some countries if it is an ISO spec. We might consider timing; if we believe EPUB 3.3 is going to make it to a rec, we can introduce the draft to ISO so that once it is a rec it will not take as long for it to be confirmed as an ISO standard.

Makoto is raising the good question; this is also what I felt seing the message from the ISO people, its meaning was more or less "Is JWG7 an empty shell"?

If we look at it pragmatically

- The work on the EPUB Accessibilty spec is done

- The work on LCP is done (ISO TS 23078-2)

- Web Publications is not a good candidate by lack of adoption

- and we can also argue that W3C Audiobooks has not seen a sufficient adoption so far to be a good candidate.

Therefore it seems to me that JWG7 is indeed an empty shell until EPUB 3.3 is a W3C recommendation.

It indeed looks like it… and I am not sure whether and what we can do about it:-(

Ivan,

Do we want to keep JWG7 alive? If we do not create

new work items for JWG7, it will be disbanded eventually.

EPUB 3.3 is not going to be a new work item for JWG7 in

the near future.

I would like to hear what people have to say.

Makoto,

yes, indeed, W3C can use the PAS procedure to publish, when the time comes, EPUB 3.3. The only thing I was saying that this was never really discussed so far and no decision has been taken It may be an issue that has to be picked up by the Steering Committee. We are well ahead of time here; after all, the REC version of EPUB 3.3 is still more than a year away…

Cheers

Ivan

Unlike IDPF, W3C can use the PAS procedure for creating

an ISO/IEC standard, if my understanding is correct. This

is a *big* change. It has impacts on the maintenance process

as well. We should carefully study what has been agreed

between W3C and ISO/IEC about the PAS procedure.

I don't think there is any decision or commitment on this.
