Re: [EPUB Roadmap] EPUB3 Justification call

Hi James,

Yes that could be useful except that I don’t understand some ePub2 cells.

All the retailers we know in France have been accepting EPUB3 files since 2016, when we at Hachette Livre switched all our EPUB production to version 3.

In your file your list, I have tagged in green those for which I al sure.
Sorry but this data doesn’t seems accurate.

Best,
Luc

Thank you Jim! This is very helpful. Can I assume that anything on here that says EPUB without a version number is accepted EPUB 2 and 3?

Thanks Julie! Do you know which distributors/reading systems you work with that do not yet accept EPUB3? It would be interesting in helping us develop a secondary target audience for this document.

We do just this at SAGE Publishing. We create an EPUB3 then run a second transformation to down-convert that package to EPUB2 for those channels/vendors that won’t accept EPUB3 files.

I think it is a good idea but it has a cost.

Although difficult to know exactly, I do think almost all old EPUB2-only devices support EPUB3 files, I mean those described in the document "EPUB2 Sunset".
At least, the tests we did in 2015 at Hachette Livre France, helped us decide to switch the entire EPUB2 production to EPUB3. With no regrets…

Best regards,
Luc

Takami-san suggested downward translation from EPUB 3 to EPUB 2.
It allows publishers to adopt EPUB 3 while continuing to support
EPUB2-only devices.

Hi all,

BISG has released a tweet today on the white paper we have been working on in the EPUB Roadmap TF.

I wanted to present it in a future PBG call but as it is now public, here it is:
Here is the link : https://github.com/readium/readium.github.io/wiki/EPUB-2-sunset

Any comments are welcome of course.

And I think we should publish it in a W3C blog. Ivan, is it possible?

Best,
Luc
