Review of MediaStream Image Capture API, Media Capture from DOM Elements API and MediaStream Recording API from Privacy Interest Group

Dear Privacy Interest Group,

The WebRTC Working Group is working towards publishing the MediaStream
Image Capture API, the Media Capture from DOM Elements API as well as
MediaStream Recording API to Candidate Recommendations and are thus
seeking review from a variety of groups on the documents:

1. https://w3c.github.io/mediacapture-image/

We are particularly interested on feedback from the Privacy Interest
Group on the impact on privacy (and the proposed mitigations) of the new
ability to capture images.

2. https://w3c.github.io/mediacapture-fromelement/

We are particularly interested on feedback from the Privacy Interest
Group on the impact on privacy (and the proposed mitigations) of the
capability introduced with this spec (i.e. capturing what is rendered in
a DOM element into a MediaStream, which in turn can be e.g. Recorded,
transmitted in real time using WebRTC etc.). One specific area of
interest regarding privacy is the handling of isolated or tainted
content being rendered.

3. https://w3c.github.io/mediacapture-record/

We are particularly interested on feedback from the Privacy Interest
Group on the impact on privacy (and the proposed mitigations) to the
fact that new ability to record data from capturing devices
(microphones, cameras) without any additional consent step that allowing
use of the capturing device(s) itself, as well as additional
fingerprinting data from the canRecordMimeType.

We of course also welcome feedback on any other aspect of the
specifications.

We would appreciate to receive feedback before January 12, 2018. We hope
to request transitions to Candidate Recommendations early next year.

If you have any comments, we prefer that you submit them as Github issues:
