RE: 48-hour Call for Consensus (CfC): Set up moderated public subscription to ARIA working list,

I do not have much of a dog in this fight, but I will add a few observations:

1. I think it's excellent to consolidate the lists.
2. The DPUB IG (and to knowledge, several WGs) used to have moderated but public lists. This is a bit confusing and more than a bit frustrating for those who are not members. As James mentioned, www-style has shifted to an anyone can post policy. I believe Web annotations began this way. DPUB followed suit. I don't know about other groups. It is much easier to maintain, and much easier for posters. The flow of a discussion is truly lost if an email is sent at 5 pm US Pacific Time when the moderator is sleeping in Central European time, and the members of the list have continued the conversation.
3. it is not hard to work around the list by simply cc-ing the original poster. As long as everyone continues to keep the poster copied, the fact that it's on list or off list is irrelevant. This will either be done intentionally or figured out accidentally when people receive the emails twice.

Subject: Re: 48-hour Call for Consensus (CfC): Set up moderated public subscription to ARIA working list,

The entirety of the CSS WG discussions happens on www-style. It’s fully open with members and non-members.

We’re trying to be inclusive and lower the barrier to entry, aren’t we?

Just put the list behavior expectations on the join page, or in the join auto-response email.
