Re: Proposed W3C Charter: Web Payments Working Group (until 2021-12-17/18)

As written in the Charter the W3C payment activity started 2015.
During this period mobile payment apps have become the norm, while W3C's efforts essentially only have been a concern for Google and Apple.
As an example PaymentRequest for Safari only supports Apple Pay which must be considered as the opposite to standards.

The Working Group have not taken these facts in consideration.

The latest WG effort, Secure Payment Confirmation (SPC), clearly under-performs compared to contemporary and quite popular app solutions like Apple Pay [*]. Since there are no known technical hurdles, this must be due to other concerns.

Payment related standards tend to take years to establish and requiring considerable marketing to succeed. For SPC it is not clear Who is going to market What and to Whom. Activities comparable to SPC like FIDO alliance, have dedicated marketing staff.

Although I am in no position to change direction, I would strongly recommend public hearings around this charter before it gets a go.

Sincerely,
Anders Rundgren
