Subject: SHEI - Qui tacet consentit

It is proposed that if there are no significant motivated objections by next

  Friday 2nd July 2010

to use as a "multilingual symbol" the letter COPTIC CAPITAL LETTER SHEI.

C.

Qui tacet consentit
  Silence implies consent

ubi loqui debuit atque potuit
when he ought to have spoken and was able to

Or in the more plain "Kimmo's doctrine": get on with it :-)

Subject: SHEI

1) Proposal
It is proposed to use as a "multilingual symbol" the letter:
 03E2 COPTIC CAPITAL LETTER SHEI

The preferred glyph should be as in
 http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U0370.pdf

though other glyphs should be acceptable, as in
 http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/03E2/index.htm

2) Business case
There is no common multilingual symbol. It is hard to represent graphically the concept "multilingual" in a clean way: lots for little flags is messy.

One of many usages could be in web pages to point to other linguistic versions.

Also, "there is no business like show business" :-)

3) MultilingualWeb Project
In the context of the MultilingualWeb Project, it could be:
  - The logo for the Project, with some additions such as a spider web (I asked a friend to do a sketch)
  - An action of the Project: to promote a multilingual symbol

4)Reasons for using this letter
  - Ready
  - Easy reference as it is in Unicode
  - Visually distinctive
  - Adapted to small graphic representation (e.g., USB logo) and it should also work for larger representations
  - A flavour of "multisomething" as the letter comes hieroglyph -> demotic -> coptic
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coptic_alphabet

5) Further verifications
Any undesirable meanings or other usages.

C.
