Logistics for MultilingualWeb Workshop

Dear colleagues,

I am writing to give you some last-minute details about the Sixth MultilingualWeb Workshop, “Making the Multilingual Web Work” to assist you in making the most of the Workshop. We thank you for your registration and look forward to seeing you in Rome next week.

First off, two important notes:
We are currently oversubscribed for the Workshop with a number of people on a waiting list. If you are no longer planning on attending the Workshop, please let us know by sending an email to Ms. Nieves Sande (Nieves.Sande@dfki.de) as soon as possible so we can give your slot to another attendee.
If you have not already sent in your photo for the security badges, please do so as soon as possible. This step is extremely important. Please send a passport-style photograph of yourself on a white background in JPEG format 190 pixels (width) x 248 pixels (height), not to exceed 100 kb to Claudia Nicolai (Claudia.Nicolai@fao.org) and Anna Radyul (Anna.Radyul@fao.org).
The call for participation page [1] includes information about how to get to the workshop and suggestions for hotels. The program can be seen at http://www.multilingualweb.eu/rome-program.

If you have any logistic or technical questions, you can write to Ms. Nieves Sande (Nieves.Sande@dfki.de). For questions about the program or the workshops in general, contact Arle Lommel (arle.lommel@dfki.de). (Do not reply to this public-mlw-announce list.)

Here is some additional information you may find useful.

REGISTRATION DESK
The registration desk will be open from 8am on Tuesday for you to pick up badges, programs, etc.

LUNCHES, EVENING RECEPTION, AND DINNER
Note that lunches are not provided. However, we encourage attendees to go for lunch in the FAO Cafeteria, where lunch prices range from €10–12. The FAO Cafeteria is supposed to have the best views in the entire city of Rome and offers a variety of meal options to meet almost any dietary need and preference.

A cocktail reception, hosted by FAO, is scheduled for 18:30 on Tuesday. Drinks and light snacks will be served.

A buffet dinner on Tuesday sponsored by Verisign will be provided starting at 19:45 at the Ristorante Orazio, a short walk from FAO. Note that preregistration is required for this dinner. If you have not previously signed up for this dinner, but would like to attend, please let Ms. Nieves Sande (Nieves.Sande@dfki.de) know by this Friday.

IRC
During the MultilingualWeb Workshop in Rome we will have people summarizing the speaker presentations in an IRC channel. These notes will be available in real time, and will be made available later from the multilingualweb.eu site. This live summarization is particularly helpful for those at the workshop who are unable to hear the speakers, and those who struggle due to language difficulties. People who could not make it to the workshop can also follow the gist of the discussions, since this will be available on an open channel.

In addition, you can *contribute* to the channel while it is running.

Here are details of how to follow the IRC channel:

If you have an IRC client:
Join the #mlwrome channel on irc.w3.org:6665

Otherwise use the web client at http://irc.w3.org/
In the Nickname field, choose a short nickname for yourself.
In the Channels field, type #mlwrome.

You will see the conversation taking place in the main part of the page. You can participate by typing in the white line at the bottom of the page.

You can practice joining the channel before the workshop starts, if you like.

You can see the (slightly cleaned up) IRC logs for the Dublin conference last June at http://www.w3.org/2012/06/11-mlwDub-minutes, http://www.w3.org/2012/06/12-mlwDub-minutes, and http://www.w3.org/2012/06/13-mlwDub-minutes

TWITTER
You are encouraged to tweet your thoughts during the workshop. Please use the hashtag #mlwrome.
You can see tweets from the Limerick workshop at http://topsy.com/s?type=tweet&q=%23mlwlim

FLICKR
If you take photos during the workshop and upload to Flickr, we suggest you use the mlwrome tag when you upload. We will then try to link to those photos from the multilingualweb.eu site.

OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA
If you make information available using other social media channels, feel free to let us know and we'll see if we can link to that too. We are also especially interested in tracking blog posts about the workshop.

QTLaunchPad EVENT
For interested parties, the QTLaunchPad project will be hosting two free workshops on Thursday, March 14. One will be on quality metrics and assessment and the second will be on research funding opportunities related to translation. For more information on these workshops and to register to join, visit http://www.qt21.eu/launchpad/events. (Note that lunch is provided for attendees at these workshops).

See you soon in Rome!

Arle Lommel
