Earlier today I came across the Media Ontology for the first time. My initial reaction was one of dismay to see the copying of the Dublin Core elements into a different namespace. I understand that the group sees the ma: properties - not as replacements for the DC and other properties, but as identifiers for mappings between equivalent properties in various formats. Nevertheless, I don't see that adding a new namespace improves the cause of interoperability if the semantics of the properties are essentially the same as those from DC and a few other namespaces. This is particularly the case when we see several of the formats already use the DC elements and more formats and software systems are using them as time goes on. Please keep defining the mapping tables, but please use the original properties and namespaces instead of defining aliases. (Please make sure any replies are addressed to me, or CC me, as I am not a subscriber to this list.)
