For consideration: comments and editing upon review of section 2.3 Supply Chain Metamodel – Activities

Below for consideration: comments and editing on 2.3 Supply Chain Metamodel – Activities. Will send remaining assigned sections in another email.

Activities
Activity Types
An Activitiy is something that … [adjust spelling to Activity]
Update punctuation in this sentence to: An activity has a start time and an end time; it can be influenced or informed by other activities (remove comma) and can be generated by something.
It's a concept central to tracking provenance. [Link from provenance is broken.]
We can usefully connect rights and provenance by indentifying the activities that are of significance in market data licenses. [adjust spelling to identifying]

Usage
Identifier: http://www.w3.org/md-odrl-profile/Usage [link says “document not found”]
Sub-class Of: Activitiy [adjust spelling to Activity]

Calculating Index [Question: if this is computing an index value based on the performance of set of constituents, do we also perhaps need a “Creating an Index” activity? For instance, I know that certain exchanges charge a fee for use of market data by an index calc agent on a firm’s behalf. Or is this what we mean already by this “Calculating Index” activity?]
Definition: Computing an index value based on the performance of an idenfied set of constituents. [adjust spelling to identified]

Platform Trading
Definition: Providing a Venue on which buy and sell orders from multiple parties are matched [Suggestion: if the “activity” here is acting as a trading venue, rather than trading on the platform, perhaps we should change the activity name to something like “Operating a Platform Trading Venue” for clarity.

Trading as Principal
Definition: Undertaking activities for their own purposes i.e. acting in one’s own name or for one’s own account - not on someone else's account (like that of a client). [If this is meant to mean firms doing prop trading, not individual retail traders, I’m concerned the definition may be too retail-sounding. Perhaps reword to something like: Trading on behalf of the firm’s own accounts, not on behalf of a client (?)

Brokerage
Definition: Acting on behalf of another person’s name and for another person’s account or acting in one’s own name and for another person’s account (i.e., trading to execute orders on behalf of clients). [Add parentheses]

Technical Support
Definition: The provision of technical assistance relating only to data quality or performance issues performed by technical support staff. [reorganize sentence to “The provision of technical assistance (by support staff) relating only to data quality or performance issues.]
Scope Note: Exludes assistance in placing or adjusting an order. [adjust spelling to excludes]

Quality Assurance
Definition: Oversight of internal data quality control and assurance (i.e., monitoring systems to ensure correct software or hardware processing to ensure an accurate flow of data). [Add parentheses and comma]
Scope Note: Exludes assistance in placing or adjusting an order. [adjust spelling to excludes]
Side note: should we consider adding a broader term like “data management” to this? Perhaps consider changing the activity name to Data Management & Quality Assurance?

Product Development
Definition: Developing new Services or further developing existing services [adjust Services to lowercase services]

Marketing
Definition: Marketing the Assignee’s Service to potential users or subscribers. [adjust Service to lowercase service]

Demonstrations
Definition: Demonstrating the Assignee’s Service to potential users or subscribers. [adjust Service to lowercase service]

Business Continuity
Definition: Maintaining and testing a business continuity envoronment. [adjust spelling to environment]
Note: If disaster strikes, and the business continuity environment becomes the live environment, then the normal permission must be used to execute business, not this one. [let’s strike “If disaster strikes,” because if for whatever reason the BC environment becomes the production/live environment, then the normal permissions apply]

Audit
Definition: An inspection of the Assignee's use of the Asset and/or the systems involved in its receipt, use, and distribution, for the purpose of determining the Assingee's compliance to the controlling license. [adjust spelling to Assignee’s. Add comma shown. Consider changing “inspection” to “examination”, as an audit does not need to be on-site; “inspection” sounds more on-site oriented.]

Reasonable Suspicion [question: would this be the activity, or would it be that there is some sort of notice or claim being provided?]
Definition: A reasonable suspicion that the Assignee is misusing the Asset..

Irreversible
Definition: A derivation activity that uses calculations that cannot be perfomred in reverse (i.e., the source Asset cannot be reverse engineered from the derived asset). [adjust spelling to performed; add parens and comma]

Non-Substitutive
Definition: The derived Asset cannot be used in the place of the source asset (i.e., cannot substitute for it in any calculations). [add parens and comma]

Thank you,
Laura

Hi everyone,

I hope you’re week has been pleasant and productive. On last week’s ODRL community group call we talked about reviewing the Market Data Profile for ODRL<https://w3c.github.io/market-data-odrl-profile/md-odrl-profile.html> document that is close to being finalized. I’d like to ask for at least two people to sign up to review one of three sections of the document. Of course the more the merrier!

The three sections are:

  * Parties and Constraints on Parties

     *   2.1 Supply Chain Metamodel – Parties<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fw3c.github.io%2Fmarket-data-odrl-profile%2Fmd-odrl-profile.html%23Parties&data=04%7C01%7Cmark.bird%40databp..com%7Cb616743110fa430520c908d90fe1c062%7Cb96ad7214b2f4c3d890decb8f034c790%7C1%7C0%7C637558284547042171%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=gd1jZ%2F3kXxNHShpqA2IMzhZ9oZBJzgUNUHjYZTCWVJ0%3D&reserved=0>

This review task will be relatively light. The goal isn’t to identify anything missing or wrong in the specification, but just to highlight areas that might be unclear. You’ll be looking for things like definitions that can be clarified or examples that can be tightened up. Taking a stab at updating the text would be great, but even simply calling out spots that need attention will be helpful.

You can email your notes to the group, and we can spend time going over them on next week’s call.

If you’d like to sign up for one of the three sections above please let me know on this thread, thanks!

Best,
Mark
