Accessibility specialist Jared Smith on twitter did an analysis of the accessibility of the top 1,000,000 websites and found this:
That’s quite telling. 

I am increasingly of the mind that the lack of reading in general is due to the unreadable low contrast text the permeates so many sites today. And the issues with certain non-perceptual methods for measuring contrast and related guidelines are part of the reason that so many sites have unreadably locon text.
