Interestingly (and a tangent from the survey question), another exception has occurred to me for both contrast SCs: grouping.

For component contrast:
Where you have a menu-bar  / collection of links, does each need a (contrasting) visual indicator?

Take your current email app, it probably has rows of buttons at the top. When you know what that thing is (i.e. the area where the links are collects stands out from other things), the primary requirement is that the buttons need clear icons.

The ‘visual indicators’ are, perhaps not redundant, but far less needed.

For graphics contrast:
Where you have a complex graphic (e.g. diagram), could you allow for mouse/focus indicators to work?

For individual icons it is important that you can discern them in the default status. However, if you have slices in a pie chart that do not have sufficient contrast from each other, but you can mouse-over them an a border is added, the important aspect is that you can discern the pie chart. So long as you can tell it is there, you can then interact to provide more contrast.

Can anyone think of problems with have an exception for those examples?

Agree with Jim here.

I think the key here is there has to be SOMETHING (a border, background color, whatever) that is of sufficient contrast that the majority of low vision users will be able to spot the graphics. Then is there enough of the graphic that provides good contrast to allow the low vision user to interpret what they are seeing.

You can probably guess the ratios, so my question is really: Is B enough for you?

The level of difficulty to meet (with various colours) goes up a lot between B & C, does the perceptibility?

To me, there is more difference between A & B than B & C, but I’m not target audience…
