Three PhD positions in Information Retrieval at the USI

The Faculty of Informatics of the Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) in Lugano, Switzerland, invites applications for 3 PhD Fellowships in Conversational Information Retrieval (CIR). The positions are expected to start on October 1st, 2023, and the deadline for applications is June 30th, 2023.

We are looking for candidates interested in working on different aspects of CIR, specifically: a) personalised CIR; b) mental-health-aware CIR; c) fair CIR (i.e., that avoids treatment of unfair and biased topics and conversational styles). 

The PhD positions are funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) project PACINO (https://rb.gy/wmjwq). The project is in collaboration with the IR Lab of the University of Amsterdam (UVA), where a fourth PhD student will work on efficient and effective CIR. 

We are looking for applicants who have completed a master's degree, have a good command of both oral and written English, and have a strong background in information retrieval, machine learning, and/or natural language processing. Preference will be given to candidates with: 

- expertise in Python programming;
- familiarity with large language models and text generation;
- ability to work independently and in a team.

Successful applicants will be part of the IR research group (https://ir.inf.usi.ch/), led by Prof Crestani, which is at the forefront of IR research with an extensive network of research collaborations. 

We offer full-time PhD positions for 4+ years with a salary ranging from CHF 47,040 to 50,040 per year, according to Swiss PhD regulations (http://rb.gy/v0ss3).
