Hi all,

in VocBench [1] we are trying to support the diffusion of (the good but mostly unfollowed habit of creating) metadata. We believe that the a true Semantic Web in which machines can cooperate can’t exist without proper metadata supporting machine discovery, selection etc.. of data. Unfortunately, it seems we live in the era of “put your data on the web” and then…dunno. Which is fine, as much as it was fine, 15 years ago, the era of frenzied ontology development without any single data source being realized with them. They are just periods, and slowly we will converge (unless we are SW skeptics :-) ) towards the final goal.

VocBench both supports the creation of metadata by providing forms and utilities for creating metadata vocabularies and automatic computation of the properties of some of them (e.g. statistical information in VoID and LIME [2] ) and exploit existing metadata for various tasks. For instance, it supports automatic ontology alignment: the interesting part about automatism is not in the factual discovery of alignments, rather in automatically setting up the environment and in fine tuning alignment tools so that they can work properly configured for any specific alignment scenario (by analyzing the metadata of the source datasets). Another trivial aspect is resolving URIs for remote resources. By default it tries to http-dereference them. However, if it has previously gathered information about the dataset associated to the URI space of a certain resource, and it has the SPARQL endpoint of that resource, then it will query the endpoint instead to resolve that resource: this is especially good in those cases where a trivial DESCRIBE is not enough (e.g. think of SKOS-XL labels, or of reified skos notes…which it knows are being used because this is present in the metadata as well). Some info are here [3,4], others are being published while new functionalities get out of beta state.

And yes, the frustrating thing is that, at the moment, there are not many repositories foe which all of this can be exploited (anyway, for repositories managed through VocBench itself, obviously it computes the metadata and stores it locally).

We hope this can be our contribution to solving the chicken-and-egg problem about metadata creation and exploitation.

Hi Jens,

yes, there are ways of using, e.g., void descriptions. However, a small study we conducted a few years ago revealed that, at least back then, they were rarely used. [1]

I don't know if things have changed in the meantime, but I'd rather doubt it.
