Thanks Paul, I enjoy a good rant. And very nice with RDFEasy and :BaseKB. I have previously mentioned a few things that relate to all this. In the world of academic publishing (as Paul well knows, I’m sure), there is an awful lot of activity and discussion on all these topics, going back to the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budapest_Open_Access_Initiative and beyond. I see quite a lot of this on various fora - for example the message below arrived just now on the JISC-REPOSITORIES list. Those who want to look at all this further may like to review the archive or even subscribe: https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A0=JISC-REPOSITORIES (If you want an exciting life, press one of Stevan Harnad’s buttons! :-) ) For what it is worth, I think there is at least a little of a consensus that the system has been driven by the entrenched interests of the publishers (hence PDF is considered “sufficient”), not excluding the learned societies, and that many of them are being dragged into the more Open world rather unwillingly. The researchers are really only pawns in this game, but with mandates and appropriate IT support their actions and culture can be changed. And I agree with Sarven that it is a sad world in which LD/SW research outputs generally don’t even eat the dogfood, never mind lead the Open Access world from the front. OK, while I’m here, I’ll say I agree with Giovanni, that certainly in this area, just publishing data hasn’t been enough. As evidence, ePrints has been publishing Linked Data for all its archives for many years now. And there are quite a few: http://roar.eprints.org/cgi/roar_search/advanced?software=eprints Apart from me (I have 24GB of ePrints-sourced metadata with ~200Mtriples), is there anyone actually consuming any of it?
