3rd International Summer School on Semantic Computing

Call for Participation

3rd International Summer School on Semantic Computing
August 8-12, 2011
at the University of California, Berkeley

Sponsored by IEEE and STI International
Supported by PlanetData, Franz Inc. and videolectures.net
Brought to you by the Institute of Semantic Computing and semsphere

Semantic Computing is a rapidly-evolving research field that integrates
representation, methods, and techniques from areas as diverse as
multimedia, computational linguistics, semantic web, knowledge
engineering and software engineering, with the goal of creating novel
technologies and applications that connect intuitively formulated user
intentions with the content and meaning of machine-represented data.

In its third edition, the Summer School on Semantic Computing 2011 will
provide an introduction to this interdisciplinary field, aimed at
professionals, PhD candidates / graduate students and senior
undergraduates. A mix of young and well-established researchers and
educators will give tutorials on cutting-edge results in these areas,
complemented by keynote talks by renowned experts and hands-on exercises
that showcase the application of the most important technologies in
real-world situations.

The 5-day event will take place just off the campus of the University of
California, Berkeley, August 8th-12th, 2011. The curriculum will include
the following topics:

- Multimedia Analysis, Annotation and Search
- Natural Language Processing
- Representation and Reasoning with Semantic Technologies
- Linked Data and Services
- Ontologies and Social Semantics

We are thrilled to again announce an exciting programme of keynote
speakers. This includes first two distinguished Berkeley emeritus
professors: Lotfi Zadeh, widely credited as the creator of Fuzzy Logic,
and Charles Fillmore, noted linguist and creator of Frame Semantics.
Also from California, we welcome Craig Knoblock, director of the
Information Integration Research Group at the Information Sciences
Institute, USC, and Jans Aasman, President and CEO of Franz Inc. Finally
from Graz University of Technology, we keenly anticipate the final
keynote from Markus Strohmaier, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of
Computer Science.
