AI-38: Post mail with concerns about BP 14

Hi,

I worked on the AI (see
http://www.w3.org/International/its/track/actions/38).

I discovered that a changed wording would address my concerns (which mainly
fell into the realm of talking about arbitrary content, not just text).

Please find my suggestions for a changed wording below. [] denotes runs of
text which should be left out, _ _ denotes runs of text which should be
added.

A span-like element is an element that can be used to mark up an arbitrary
content and associate with it various properties such as directionality or
language information. Examples of such element [is] _are_ the span element
in XHTML, or the phrase element in DocBook.

How to do this

Make sure to define a span-like element in your [content] _schema_ that will
allow the authors to associate [a delimited section] _arbitrary content_
with [language-oriented] properties such as directionality, or language
information.

If your schema does not provide such an element, you should allow the
its:span element. [to be used in any element that can contain text.]

Why do this

Some properties of [a text] _content_ are applied using attributes. [, and]
therefore] _Since these attributes sometimes are not allowed on the
content,_ [require the use of] a neutral _(namely a span-like)_ element _is
required_ that [has for unique function to] delimits the run of text to
which the attributes apply. Directionality, terminology, localization notes,
translatability, or language identification are examples of such properties.
