Localizing metadata for publishers

Hi all,

I’ve gotten a request from an old friend that seems like it would be right up the alley for many in LIDER and the ITS interest group, so I thought I’d post it here to see what thoughts those in these groups have.

I've been asked to investigate how to localize metadata for a scientific/academic book publisher. They want to be able to support search on retail platforms such as Amazon. I can see several basic things:

1. Translate the metadata. (watching for context)
2. Map translated metadata to appropriate book classification standards.
3. Use a terminology management strategy or technology to map related terms to preferred metadata terms.
4. Translate larger chunks of text, such as book descriptions.

But, most of what I see out there on google is either related to using vendors to localize metadata for apple apps OR down in the weeds examinations of XLIFF or other markup languages to see how to reference properties files.

That leaves a big gap: What does it mean to systematically manage metadata and their localized text and integrate it into retail and distribution platforms.

Any case studies or hints you may have for where to investigate is appreciated!

Any thoughts of additional things my friend should be considering?
