Getting (re)started [Please read]

Chaps,

I've been working on the topic index again this week
http://www.w3.org/International/resource-index
and trying to catch up with getting all the resources properly indexed. (It will take a while yet).

As I worked on it, it became more and more frustrating to realise that we still need but don't have the Getting Started material we have discussed on and off for some time. As the index grows, a simple pathway into the resources for newcomers to internationalization becomes more and more important. So I decided to do something about it.

Please take a look at http://www.w3.org/International/getting-started/

Then take a look at http://www.w3.org/International/getting-started/characters

I'd like to discuss these on Wednesday at the telecon, then PUBLISH on Thursday or Friday this week. I've devised an approach that we can complete little by little, and improve as we go. Otherwise, I think it will be many more months before we manage to produce anything, and we've been talking about this for many months already. I'm taking the view that something imperfect now is better than nothing at all.

Note that these pages currently suggest that you could filter the results. I'm trying to write the text to enable that, but I haven't implemented the mechanism yet. If we publish this this week, I will simply comment out all references to filters until we have a mechanism in place. It will probably be PHP driven, eventually.

Please take a look and let me know what you think.

Thanks,
RI
