Folks, Now that the JLReq document is public, I think we need a better strategy for handling comments on the JLReq doc from the public. The current lists are really only designed for internal use. I have copied in the i18n WG and Martin as IG chair because the solution I propose at the end of this email would benefit from checking by them, not least because it may apply to other areas in the future. Currently, people send comments to www-i18n-comments and I have to then forward them to the JLTF lists. The problem with this is that people have to subscribe to the www-i18n-comments list in order to send the comments, but even though they go to that trouble, that doesn't currently enable them follow any discussion or response that may arise from their contribution. I think people should be able to send comments to a public list; the people who will be involved in any discussion that arises should also be subscribed to that list; people who want to follow the discussion, but who are not part of the task force should be able to subscribe to the list also. Here are some possible ways to achieve this: 1. continue to use the i18n-comments list, but without forwarding 2. use the www-international list 3. create a new public list. In each case, enough people from the JLTF task force must be subscribed to the list that is used to allow for discussions. If we use the i18n-comments or www-international lists, there may be a high noise factor, since those lists are used for wide ranging discussions. This is particularly the case for www-international. It may be better to create a new list under the W3C I18n Interest Group, as we did with the public-i18n-bidi list (for discussion of bidirectional text issues). I think it would make sense to not limit this list purely to JLReq discussions. There are also discussions on various lists at the moment about vertical text, ruby, etc, and I think those are of common interest. In fact, I think that Chinese and Korean issues may also be of interest, eventually. So I propose to do the following: Set up a list called public-i18n-cjk, and subscribe all JLTF folks to that list, and forward comments on the JLReq doc to that list, encouraging commenters to also join the list. Mention the list to those who have been discussing ruby and vertical text. Please send feedback if you think that there is a better way. Unless someone suggests a reason not to, I will request the new list be set up in a few days time, and will sign people up.
