In sum, to vertically layout the "-196℃", @KobayashiToshi san recommends: - Use U+2212 MINUS SIGN instead of U+FF0D FULLWIDTH HYPHEN-MINUS - If it is three digits make each digit upright. Usually Tate-chu-yoko is recommended for up to two digits. - Using the combining character "℃" is ok. Alternatively use "°" and "C" and make the whole part rotated 90° like English words. - Alternatively, it could be spelled out like "マイナスセ氏一九六度". He also explained that there is no definite right or wrong here.
