Having a DB background, I would also consider Erik's interpretation the most natural. In fact, that's how we formalized LDFs in our ISWC paper: For any TPF whose selector does not match any triple in the underlying RDF graph, the set \Gamma is empty. Nonetheless, it's an ordinary TPF.
