The mysterious i in rendering rules

What does the part " i" mean in the Rendering section, in rules like the 
following?

br[clear=left i] { clear: left; }

It appears frequently there. I cannot find any explanation, and
it does not conform to any CSS specification or draft that I know.

If it is a metanotation, it should appear so that it won't be understood
as part of the CSS code. In any case, it should be explained.
