FYI as this discussion was the impetus, I summarized the situation
around breadcrumbs (as well as my own view) in
<http://meiert.com/en/blog/20131003/breadcrumbs-in-html/>.

TL;DR: I argue that “<nav id=breadcrumb><a>Item 1</a> → Item 2</nav>”
may be most appropriate (and that delimiters may represent content,
not styling).
