RE: use cases for figure without figcaption?

On the basis that a figure is a chunk of content that can be referenced from
elsewhere, I’m struggling to think of one.

 

A figure that isn’t referenced doesn’t seem to fulfil the purpose of a
figure. Without a figcaption there would be no way to visually identify the
figure being referenced would there?
