Charter Extended

Dear Working Group participants,

The HTML Working Group charter [1] has been extended until 31
December 2014 to continue work on the HTML5 specification and its
companion specifications. The charter milestones have been updated
based on discussion between the HTML Working Group Chairs and the W3C
staff:

  * Our immediate priority is to advance HTML5 to Last Call in May
2011. The goal of Last Call is to satisfy the technical
requirements and is an invitation to communities inside and
outside W3C to confirm the technical soundness of the
    specification.

  * There is a new a target date for Recommendation of mid-2014. This
is the target date when we anticipate broad interoperability HTML5
is already in use, and people are providing feedback to
implementers and to the Working Group, which seeks broad
interoperability for this cornerstone of the Open Web Platform.

Starting in March, W3C will dedicate new staff to drive development of
an HTML5 test suite. Our first task is to expand the existing test
framework [2] by the mid-2011, which will encourage browser vendors
and the community to create test cases. Ongoing active participation
by browser vendors, other software developers, and the community in
implementation and testing will help ensure the successful and timely
roll-out of the standard.

As part of the W3C HTML Working Group's mission to continue the
evolution of HTML, W3C Director Tim Berners-Lee also encourages the
group to begin discussion of requirements for future versions of HTML
after HTML5 reaches Last Call.

As usual, while this extension runs until the end of the 2014, it is
always possible for the Director to solicit an Advisory Committee
review prior to that date if necessary.

Thank you,

Philippe
