http://www.w3.org/Bugs/Public/show_bug.cgi?id=6779 Summary: Clarify the difference between elements and tags Product: HTML WG Version: unspecified Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Keywords: externalComments Severity: normal Priority: P3 Component: Spec bugs AssignedTo: dave.null@w3.org ReportedBy: lachlan.hunt@lachy.id.au QAContact: public-html-bugzilla@w3.org CC: ian@hixie.ch, mike@w3.org, public-html@w3.org A commenter on the whatwg blog [1] expressed confusion over the requirement of the root element, while still allowing its tags to be omitted. The spec is technically correct, but I suggest that the spec include some explanatory text in the Optional Tags section [2] explaining that in the case of omitted tags, particularly start tags, the elements are still present.
