Control characters are evil -- in normal text editors they're hard to type,
impossible to see, and hard to delete even if you can find them. They should
be necessary as infrequently as possible.
It would be useful to have a concrete example of a script that would like to
know when the user changes textarea/input directionality. I can't think of one
offhand.
