I don't think that your sarcastic reasoning "cargo-cult accessibility" has any
grounds.

You didn't respond on my question why "pretty looking and manipulative images"
should be hidden for blind or visually impaired users.

Believe or not, blind users care about images:

It's sad that such a simple issue needs to be escalated to the full HTML
Working Group despite having several suggestions how to accommodate the
request.
