I want to point out that for the code example above, the only link text is the
@alt text. Thus the alt text has to serve a double cause: as link text and as
@alt text. By the addition of rel="longdesc", the AT has the option of stating
"long description" as the text of the - in this case - longdesc link.

It is logical to solve the simple and most widespread problems first ...
