Reporting - 1st Latin American Linked Data Meetup

Hi all

Thanks Bernadette for letting me report on this.
Last March we organized the event [1] in Cuenca, Ecuador. Our goal was to
promote Linked Data in Latin America, and gather the community we have
there. We had a set of presenters from different parts of the world, and
for this first edition many of the talks were presented online. We hope we
can organize next year a new edition. The event went very well, it was an
opportunity to identify all the people from Latin America that is involved
in some way with the Linked Data community around the world.

We, as Latin America Linked Data community, plan to create an organization
that promotes the discussion, dissemination and research
of Semantic Web technologies and Linked Data in Latin America. This space
is open to research/academic communities, social, commercial, and
governmental organizations. We have an initial web site here [2]. We know
there are other Latin America efforts in this area, and my idea is to try
to align all of them if possible.

I do not know if we can create this association under the umbrella of a big
organization, e.g., W3C, OKFN. All the members of the association need to
discuss about it.

Any ideas, suggestions, are more than welcome.

Thanks!

Boris

 Hi Boris,
Somehow I missed this email! I'm sorry we didn't congratulate you at the
time for helping to get the Meetup running. Please let the GLD WG know how
it went, what is planned next and if there is anything we can do promote it.

 Cheers,
Bernadette Hyland

Apologies for cross-posting

We are pleased to announce the 1st Latin American Linked Data Meetup, to be
held at University of Cuenca, Ecuador on March 21-22, 2013 [1].

The Latin American Linked Data Meetup aims at stimulating the publication
and consumption of Linked Data datasets in Latin America. This is the right
time for gathering the Latin American Linked Data community around an event
that includes talks, keynotes, discussions, demonstrations and social
events.

This meetup is oriented towards people interested in learning about Linked
Data and its principles; government and industry personnel working on the
publication of data on the Web, developers designing and building
applications that reuse the Web of Data; scientists interested in analyzing
the structure, interconnections and properties of the published data; and
stakeholders interested in applying Linked Data technologies in their
business processes. In addition to all that, we will cover transversal
topics related to the Web of Data, including Smart Cities, Education,
Digital TV, Geospatial data, Libraries, etc.

This meetup intends to be the first of many further events that will
consolidate the growing Linked Data community in Latin America. For this
first edition, some of the talks and keynotes will be presented online by
experts on the field.

The programme will be announced in due course. Confirmed speakers at this
stage are:

Maria Esther Vidal - Universidad Simón Bolivar, Caracas, Venezuela
Edna Ruckhaus - Universidad Simón Bolivar, Caracas, Venezuela
Juan Sequeda - University of Texas at Austin, USA
Claudio Gutierrez - Universidad de Chile, Chile
