I've just updated the spec [1] to require that the deviceorientation event fires when a listener first registers for the event. This is to provide the web app with the orientation without it having to wait until the orientation changes. This came up on the WebKit mailing list [2]. Hopefully this isn't a controversial change, but please let me know if you have concerns.
