Alternatives are welcome, but priority #1 should be widespread adoption in the easiest possible way. That sets the borderss like this (IMHO only, please flame). - Use *only* open standards - Make sure it is as decentralized as possible. In that sense even relying on DNS could be a problem. We might need to focus on better alternatives for "virtual home discovery" but given the current state of the net, it is acceptable to use DNS to kickstar the whole thing. - Focus on garantueed owenrship of content and data. - The reference implementation *must* be 100% Open Source/Free Software (AGPL prefererred from my side) - Define very precise the input/output per stack element to avoid any confusion. - Extensions come later. First the fundament is needed. In this set of criteria, my ideal solution would be a modularised (UNIX style) code collection that dynamically can move between running in a browser or on a dedicated place somewhere else (a small VM, LXC, whatever). The possibility to actually move code from A (browser) to B (server) in a dynamic way is a killer feature IMHO and would really change the world. To avoid creating bloatware (see the requirements for the Freedom Box - perl, PHP, python etc) the reference implementation should be JS only. Later on parts of the stack can be optimised depending on platforms etc. but in m yideal world it would be JS only.
