We are pleased to announce the first public release of ONKI Light -
version 0.1.

ONKI Light is a tool for publishing SKOS vocabularies as services on the
Web for human browsing as well as machine access via APIs. The tool
provides functionalities such as term search, hierarchy visualization
and alphabetical indexes. The user interface is multilingual, currently
supporting Finnish, Swedish and English.

Architecturally ONKI Light is a user interface and machine API layer on
top of a SPARQL endpoint. Currently Jena Fuseki with jena-text is the
preferred store, but any SPARQL 1.1 compliant endpoint may be used. A
single instance of ONKI Light can host multiple vocabularies, which can
reside on different SPARQL endpoints. In addition to the web interface,
the tool provides a REST-style API that serves JSON-LD data, and Linked
Data access.

ONKI Light was originally conceived within the FinnONTO and Linked Data
Finland projects at the Semantic Computing Research Group at Aalto
University. Since this spring, development has moved to the National
Library of Finland, where a national service for providing controlled
vocabularies for both human and machine access is currently being set
up. The production system will be based on ONKI Light and is scheduled
to go online in the beginning of January 2014. A pre-production system
is already online at a temporary URL [1].

ONKI Light is implemented using PHP, using libraries such as Twig,
jQuery, jsTree and EasyRdf. The code is open source under the MIT
license. All development happens openly at the Google Code project pages
[2], where you can also find an issue tracker and documentation in the
wiki. Any comments, suggestions or issue reports are very welcome!

Best regards,
Osma Suominen
