RE: EPUB videos

FYI, here’s the relevant statement in 3.0.1 that allows any type of resource to be referenced from track elements:

 

>  In this version of this specification, the  <http://www.idpf.org/epub/301/spec/epub-publications.html#refHTML5> [HTML5]  <http://www.w3.org/TR/html5/Overview.html#the-track-element> track element is exempt from the  <http://www.idpf.org/epub/301/spec/epub-publications.html#confreq-cmt> Core Media Type usage rule: Foreign Resources may be referenced from track without the provision of a Core Media Type fallback.

This was done to ensure accessible tracks can be easily included, of whatever type.

Hi all— I don’t recall having problems packaging “text/vtt” files in our EPUBs, which are valid 3.0.1. In fact, the EPUB test suite <https://github.com/IDPF/epub-testsuite>  includes examples. Remember to add a line in the OPF file:

Using HTML 5 way to combine WebVTT caption in video tag is great, its media-type is "text/vtt".

I'm afraid that EPUB validator may see it as unsupported file format. So better embed the caption into the video file.

Subler is a nice tool on macOS that you can add a caption channel with WebVTT. If any trouble, rename the .vtt to .srt.

I did mean to mention that the YouTube-generated captions needed editing, particularly for phrasing and sentence structure. My job was relatively brief, so not a big deal.

I caution against using the auto-created captions that YouTube offers. They are poorly structured and often contain inaccuracies. For short clips it isn't a lot of work to type accurate captions yourself. If you have a large amount of video that needs captioning, there are many agencies that can provide captions that will be much better than the auto-captions.

 

However, it sounds like from Jeff Buehler's note that there is still no way to add the VTT to the EPUB except to hand edit the HTML.

I’ve uploaded video to YouTube, which can create captions. 

 

Then, I downloaded the captions and combined them with the video using Wondershare Video Converter.

 

You can create captions in YouTube, but you can’t embed them and then download the captioned video. You can only create the captioning, then download as a text file.

 

All this is on the Mac.

We tried this a year or so ago and found that adding captions to video in epub required hand-editing the HTML of the epub file. However, I'd be thrilled to hear if anyone knows of better solutions that have come along.

Hi,

I have couple of questions regarding videos in EPUB file.

 

1) In windows:

      Using Sigil I tried to embed mp4 files to an EPUB file.

      I am not able to embed the video. 

 

This approach works on MAC.

 

Can you please advise how I can embed mp4 files to an EPUB file in windows?

 

2) How can we add captions and audio description  to the embedded video?
