Re: Ben Schroeter

This is such terrible news! One of the last times I talked with Ben, not
long ago, he commented on his interest in retiring in the
not-too-distant future. (He was younger than me; what was he thinking,
retiring?!?!) When I sat down at my laptop just now and saw the lead on
George's email, that we will miss Ben on our calls (which we will: he
was a reliably intelligent, calm, and committed presence; he had strong
opinions but you usually couldn't tell because his tone was so
unfailingly reasonable and level-headed), I thought, "Oh, damn, Ben went
and retired on us." Oh, how I wish that had been the reason. This is so
shocking; a huge loss first of all to his family; and to his friends,
and to the industry so many of us have been so devoted to over the
years. I'm only glad to hear that it was swift. He will be remembered by
many of us for many years.--Bill
