This is such terrible news! One of the last times I talked with Ben, not long ago, he commented on his interest in retiring in the not-too-distant future. (He was younger than me; what was he thinking, retiring?!?!) When I sat down at my laptop just now and saw the lead on George's email, that we will miss Ben on our calls (which we will: he was a reliably intelligent, calm, and committed presence; he had strong opinions but you usually couldn't tell because his tone was so unfailingly reasonable and level-headed), I thought, "Oh, damn, Ben went and retired on us." Oh, how I wish that had been the reason. This is so shocking; a huge loss first of all to his family; and to his friends, and to the industry so many of us have been so devoted to over the years. I'm only glad to hear that it was swift. He will be remembered by many of us for many years.--Bill On 2022-09-11 12:41, kerscher@montana.com wrote: > We will miss Ben on our calls and at conferences. > > He was a wonderful advocate for accessibility! > > Best > > George > > From: Charles LaPierre <charlesl@benetech.org> > Sent: Saturday, September 10, 2022 5:56 PM > To: Johnson, Rick <Rick.Johnson@vitalsource.com>; > public-epub-wg@w3.org; Michael Johnson <michaelj@benetech.org>; Ashley > Wells Ajinkya <ashleywa@benetech.org>; Pam Berkman > <pamb@benetech.org>; George Kerscher <georgek@benetech.org> > Subject: Re: Ben Schroeter > > Rest In Peace Ben, my condolences to his family and all at Pearson. > Ben brought Pearson to Benetech's Global Certified Accessible program > when we were just piloting it back in 2017 and did the Publisher > Faceoff at CSUN. > > Ben was a strong advocate of accessibility and was a huge contributor > to the EPUB standards. > > I will miss you, my friend. > > Thanks > > Charles > > EOM > > Charles LaPierre > > Principal, Accessibility Standards, and Technical Lead, Global > Certified Accessible > > Benetech > > ------------------------- > > From: Johnson, Rick <Rick.Johnson@vitalsource.com> > Sent: Saturday, September 10, 2022 4:46:16 PM > To: public-epub-wg@w3.org <public-epub-wg@w3.org> > Subject: Ben Schroeter > > For those of you who knew Ben Schroeter from his time with > CourseSmart, with VitalSource, and Pearson, he passed today.
