I think there is a case for saying that a dataset series is _conceptually_ a single dataset, but composed of several subsets, which share most of their properties. A catalog is more heterogeneous. I agree with the view expressed by @dr-shorthair and the flattening idea from @jakubklimek. This is also the direction followed in the early draft in Pr #1292.
