Relative to today’s discussion about the STEM survey and the analysis / interpretation of results, some of you might be interested in this blog entry about a user study now being conducted by the publishing arm of the American Mathematical Society. The author is the Associate Executive Director of Publishing at the AMS. http://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2015/04/22/ethnography-a-scientist-discovers-the-value-of-the-social-sciences/ (I don’t think anyone on this list has mentioned this link yet, apologies if you’ve already seen this.) Sadly he doesn’t report out actual results from the AMS study yet, and historically the AMS (or at least Math Reviews) has at times been a bit narrow about what they report out. We’ll have to wait and see in this instance. (Probably you’ve heard this one before, but an old hand from MR says that on one occasion they went outside to find an expert to help design their user needs survey – the outside expert in their first meeting started by asking, what conclusions do you wish to come out of this survey? Based on what you tell me we can design the questions appropriately. When MR told him they didn’t have conclusions already in mind, the expert reportedly told them it would be much harder to do the survey then. This may of course be more urban myth than reality but it makes a good point.)
