OK, so I've looked at this some more and started [adding info in a table](https://github.com/w3c/sensors/blob/gh-pages/sensor-types.md). To make a long story short, on the platforms that matter the most for the kinds of sensors we're exposing (i.e. Android and iOS), access to the sensors is actually pretty high-level and in fact, quite similar to the APIs we plan to expose.
