This is going to be really interesting since I imagine that it varies a lot per-platform. It might be the case that platforms like Android don't actually give you the lowest-level access possible and that is only possible on desktop systems. Or maybe they do, but you have to drop down to manual serial port communication instead of using the built-in Android APIs for the relevant sensors.
