So that is not really for finding direction then. In the above it is basically used to make the cardboard button. So calibration is really for finding the direction of magnetic north, it is kind of a compass. And that calibration is not a fixed calibration but one which can happen at specific times or continiously - which I guess is why most magnetic field sensors have a way to check whether the values are reliable or not. If you just want to check magnetic fields around you - apart from the geomagnetic one, then you ought to use uncalibrated values. We should really find some good names for these.
