This comment, plus the desire to have a flexible system for future color spaces makes me wonder: should we not just support CIEXYZ in the spec? Reason being, XYZ is the lowest common denominator in color conversion formulas and actually is the mapping of the visible spectrum. If a token set has XYZ values for their color, conversions into almost any other color space are one or two conversions away. 

Albeit maybe this isn't useful in practice (XYZ colors can't be used out-of-the-box), but worth surfacing the question to the group.
