I assume, most authors would prefer variant 4 of your example, so overlapping horizontally and vertically. Though as that's just speculation and all use cases can be done relatively easily with the changed behavior, I agree it's ok to defer adding one or more keywords for those cases. Once we have some data on how gap decorations are used in the wild, we can reconsider adding keywords. And yes, joining segments is mostly useful for solid lines.
