I didn't follow the discussion of this closely, though @jakearchibald's concerns are very reasonable. I think we should make a step back and (re-)consider the anticipated use cases and how they can be solved with existing features like `attr()`. And I also agree with him that any possible solution for use cases not covered by the existing functionality should try to work in both SPAs and MPAs as far as possible. I guess because of #8320, which you kicked off, @jakearchibald.😉 Again, I don't have the full picture on this, so I am missing whether _fully automatic_ matching of elements is something desirable.
