Typically I see sort controls near a specific header cell (Excel, Numbers, etc), so in that design on the pattern you mentioned, I would expect the focus order of the floating control to follow the header cell. If you have a visual mockup in mind of the sort control outside the grid, it may be helpful to share the illustration so that we’re visualizing the same control.
