I think the only reason `::part(name)` has been designed as it is to avoid author names impeding with future built-ins. In fact, WebKit names some existing pseudo-elements like `::placeholder` or `::file-selector-button` to "user-agent parts". If the syntax for `::part(name)` was instead `::--name`, this issue to me is conceptually equivalent to asking to use `::--details-content` instead of `::details-content`...
