The argument that :empty without including whitespace (the old spec) is confusing should be rephrased as "More than 50% of developers that have not read the documentation for :empty assumes that it includes whitespace" ...if that statement is _not_ true, then changing :empty to include whitespace would _increase_ the total amount of confusion instead of decrease it.
