Not equivalent to interpolation. Compositing might invoke *the same math* as interpolation (dunno what the math is off the top of my head), but it's still a distinct process from "standard" interpolation and has different effects (the interpolation % would be relative to the top-layer's alpha, for example, and the resulting alpha is not determined by interpolation at all).
