Yeah I completely agree.
Without Web Preferences you'd have to just do "color-scheme: --solarized-dark;" and swap it out when they change their mind. Kinda like how you have to currently if you provide a site user preference.

The `prefers-color-scheme` bit would also be relying on Web preferences API to know which of the color scheme is currently active.
