That's not at all guaranteed. "It works in the spec" doesn't mean we get the implementation for free - see all the bugs where browsers still don't support calc() in various spots that take a numeric value. Skipping a little spec work isn't a great argument to organize something a particular way, especially if that implies a suboptimal authoring syntax (nested functions).
