In fact that also addresses the concern of `gap-fill` replacing the spacing benefits with borders entirely. I wonder if this is still a relevant idea, for a few reasons: 1. Highlighting gaps might be a neat feature for design software on the web 2. I could see gap background colors being used in combination with `column-rule-*` and `row-rule-*` properties; one to serve as the background and the other to serve as a divider. 3.
